In You Go
John Hemming Clarke
IN YOU GO! A year or two in the life of a scout leader is about the first couple of years that John Hemming-Clark recently spent as a scout leader in Chislehurst, Kent at a time of life when some are maybe starting to think about putting their feet up. His trials and tribulations as he seeks to learn the ropes with only the essential training to help him, that and his life experiences, are written about in hilarious detail. Troop meetings, hikes, camps, excursions, his relationship with beavers, cubs and explorers as well as girl guides, leaders, trainers and managers are all included. Read about -how John became a leader after having been sacked as a scout committee chairman -his first troop meeting with just one scout, until three girls turned up -a camping training weekend when John's past finally caught up with him -the infamous hammock camp when a tsunami appeared out of nowhere -the summer camp when a girl guide welly stick was liberated for the day, only to find out that it wasn't actually what the scouts thought it was -a trip to Bewl Water reservoir when an alternative toilet was discovered -a hike when some scouts took up smoking -a winter camp where John was led very astray -the day Bear Grylls ran over his 'phone -the beavers' Nativity play when one boy stole the show -why one team came last on Monopoly on the Run -a family camp when a cub's parents disgraced themselves -the resuscitation evening when Little Annie came into her own, despite being a dummy -an Outdoor Challenge badge weekend when John went home with only one welly -when the scouts made "non-alcoholic" cocktails with a secret ingredient -the April Fool's Day activity badge that the scouts actually completed -the day the scouts hiked along a sewer -the day John nearly died whilst white water rafting with the devil -the camp where a girl guide won the "best scout" award -the day when a Swedish girl guide and John both had "heart attacks" after a Brown Owl's dinner was bombed -a shopping trip to a reservoir and much, much more 35 chapters of some of the funniest things that have ever happened in scouting. If ever you have wondered what really goes on at scouts once the children have been dropped off at what many consider to be an unofficial baby-sitting service, when sitting is the last thing that scouts do, then this book is for you.

The private diaries of an adventurous scout and his scout leader. Alex lives in Chislehurst, Kent where he’s, so far, been cosseted from the harsh realities of life. He has just moved up to the Scout Section from Cubs and is sooo excited! He has decided to keep a diary of his new adventures. His Scout leader, John (Skip) also lives in Chislehurst. He has kept a diary for many years. However, more recently his diary has focussed on his Scouting. Not so much the adventures, but the trials and tribulations of being a Scout leader as he recounts the same situations as Alex but through a leader’s eyes and not a Scout’s, alongside his - sometimes strained - relationships and dealings with Scout parents. Sleeping Bags and Tortures is three stories in one book: the diary of a Scout, the diary of a Scout leader, and interwoven together the hilarious story of one year in the life of 3rd Chislehurst Scouts. From Alex's start in the Scout Section, he and John take us on a journey through troop meetings and outdoor activities with much of the summer holiday devoted to a daily diary kept during a trip to the Aosta Valley in Italy on a crazy camp which shows the Scouting spirit at its best. However, amongst the fun, not all is as it seems. For one person we start to get the impression that the fun is ending and the seriousness of life is beginning, perhaps a little too soon. Sleeping Bags and Tortures is written in a way that makes it accessible not only to Scouts and leaders, but also to most parents and teenagers (so long as the young people only read Alex’s entries and even then with parental guidance), as well as anyone who has ever worked with children and who has an appreciation of the almost larger than life characters that some of them are. However, it was never intended that these diaries be published, so apologies in advance to anyone who feels offended. They have also been left more or less unaltered in order to preserve an original feel. This does at times mean that Alex’s grammar and spelling aren’t always as good as is taught in some schools. This is John Hemming-Clark's second story book, a follow up to his immensely successful "In You Go! A Year or Two in the Life of a Scout Leader.

1000 Fantastic Scout Games
John Hemming Clarke
Not another book of games?! As a Scout Leader I was getting fed up with organising the same old games for my scouts and they were getting fed up with playing them. It was time for a change. I needed loads of games, of all different types, and in one book. I needed some that were quiet, some noisy, some wacky, but most of all I needed games that my scouts would want to play. Sadly that book didn’t exist so I set about writing it. 1000 Fantastic Scout Games is the result. There are in fact, with the variations, well over one thousand. Most of these games require, if any, minimal amounts of equipment. Nearly all of the games have been tried and tested by my scouts or some of my friends’ scouts. I’ve tried to make the instructions as clear as possible without rambling on too much. Also I’ve listed them alphabetically rather than by type. I did try categorising - but failed. Most games belong in several categories. After all, many indoor games can be played outside and vice-versa, with the exception of wet and wide games. Noisy games can be quiet and quiet games sometimes get very noisy, so rather than attempt to categorise them I’ve just thrown them all in and apologise in advance for the fact that you will have to read through or take pot luck to find what you’re looking for, rather than just turn to a particular category. It’s therefore designed to be a book to either read through or dip into to find some gems that your group will love to play rather than a prescriptive, “You want a quiet game - here’s a list”. Some of the games have been given Top Fifty status. The games are all ones that ten to fourteen year olds particularly love to play, but nearly all of the games can be played by any age, adult or child, and not just scouts and guides but anyone who realises the importance of group play (as opposed to sitting alone and in front of a y-bother box with a jittery finger and the attention span of a goldfish - i.e. ten seconds). I'm sure that you will love 1,000 Fantastic Scout Games, if not send it back and I'll refund you in full. John Hemming-Clark. author

Scouts at War Vol 1 The Great War
Scouting Milestones - Colin Walker
Colin Walker is one of the finest Scout historians we have, and he has done a great service in researching and documenting the Scouts’ contribution to the First World War. There is so much here that will fascinate and educate those interested in what their forebears did here on the home front. Not only does he cover the familiar stories, he unearths the forgotten and unusual – the five patrols of Scouts from Northampton for example who conceivably had never seen the sea. Together they contributed 7,500 days of service as coastguards. There are also the amazing stories of the 5,000 Scouts working in the fields – ‘like pirates with neckerchiefs tied around their heads’, harvesting the flax, used to make linen from which our war planes were fabricated. Many books hve been written about the First World War, but few as inspiring as this – when the youth of the nation proved that young people had an invaluable role to play in society and proved they could lift spirits as well as shouldering their fair share of the work. Scouting Milestones - Colin Walker
rownsea: B-P’s Acorn is the story of the World’s First Scout Camp and the subsequent Scout History of the Island up to the present day, including the 1907-2007 Scout Centennial Celebrations. The author was an advisor to the Re-enactment Camp held on Brownsea exactly one hundred years after Baden-Powell first blew his Kudu horn to rouse the campers at the start of his Experimental Camp. Whilst consulting all existing historical resources nothing has been taken for granted and, from his own first-hand detailed research, Colin Walker challenges the accepted wisdom on the number of boys at the camp, giving exact provenance for his conclusions about the ‘mystery boy’. All known correspondence relating to the camp, some sent from the Island, is also detailed and every photograph thought to be taken there is illustrated. Following extensive details of the original camp, one hundred years of somewhat surprising Scout History on Brownsea is described with accuracy and humour, shedding new light on the myths that have grown up over so many years. B-P’s Biographer, William Hillcourt, once called for all the existing information on the Scout History of Brownsea to be compiled in one book. This is it!

The Dawn of the World Scout Movement
Scouting Milestones - Colin Walker
The Dawn of the World Scout Movement is an apt sequel to the work on the Brownsea Experimental Camp. It documents the significance of the events of 1908, starting with an analysis of Baden-Powell’s diaries that the author has transcribed from the originals. This provides a unique insight into B-P’s life at the inception of the Scout Movement. The major influences on the Founder are examined including the much-understated roles of the ‘Brother Organisations’; the Boys’ Brigade, Church Lads’ Brigade and the YMCA. The controversial contribution of US pioneer Ernest Thompson Seton is evidenced and placed in its rightful context. Equally significant, though short lived, was the involvement of the little known Legion of Frontiersmen. The phenomenal spread of Scouting in 1908 is illustrated through the history of significant founding troops, both within the UK and abroad (including a 1908 US Troop!) The highly significant first national Scout Camp, held at Humshaugh in Northumberland, is documented definitely, using unpublished photographs and with reference to four original diaries. On their 100th anniversary Scout Historian Colin Walker recalls the events of 1908 through the eyes of Baden-Powell and his Scouting pioneer

Jam Roll’. The Man and his ‘Motors
Scouting Milestones - Colin Walker
Scout Historian Colin Walker has written extensively on the history of the Scout Movement, the life of Baden-Powell and the Siege of Mafeking. This book was inspired by the purchase in 2008, for Scouting, of Baden-Powell’s Rolls-Royce, ‘Jam Roll’. It is the story of Baden-Powell’s cars, from his 1908 18 h.p. Thornycroft, to the laying-up of Jam Roll in 1938, when its owner departed for Kenya . This period exactly matches the Founder’s active leadership of the Scout Movement. Using the vehicles as a focus, the author has been able to provide an insight into the lives of Baden-Powell and his family, and the changing social conditions through which they lived. The history of B-P’s ‘Jam Roll’ Rolls-Royce begins with the idea to raise a ‘penny subscription’ amongst Scouts to give B-P an appropriate gift at the 1929 ‘Coming of Age’ Jamboree. It continues in interesting detail through to the recent acquisition of the vehicle by the Scouting charity, B-P Jam Roll Ltd. The very readable story is not without is surprises and intrigue and points up the need for Scouting to take its history very seriously indeed if it wishes to preserve our heritage to inform future generations. All profits relating to sales of this book are to be used for the preservation and display of Jam Roll, under the management of the charity B-P Jam Roll Ltd.

Scouting Milestones - Colin Walker
A5 format 75 pages black and white and coloured images. There are other books about Jack Cornwell but none written from a Scouting perspective. This illustrated account of JT Cornwell VC, documents his roots in East London, Scouting history, and his naval training prior to the Battle of Jutland when he was fatally wounded. Cornwell became a national hero as famous at the time for the unfortunate manner is which he was first buried , as for his heroic act of 'standing by his gun', After a second burial with full military and Scouting honours , he was posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross and is still the youngest Englishman ever to receive this honour. His fame launched many commemoratives, many of them Scouting related, postcards, cigarette cards etc which are painstaking documented and illustrated in the book including those of more recent times.
